Project team member Dr. Mahmood Kooria has been awarded the Trans-regional Research Scholar Fellowship of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC).
The grant will enable him to continue his research on the Indian Ocean legal interactions of Muslims with a focus on the matrilineal and matriarchal communities of Asia and Africa. Through historical and ethnographic researches, he will explore how the Muslim matrilineal communities in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and Mozambique reconcile the perceived contradictions of their customs with the Sharia.
During the project, he will be affiliated with the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden and the National University of Singapore.
